SHAID’s Accidental Pregnancy Program is designed to support pet owners who unexpectedly find themselves caring for a pregnant cat, nursing mother, or unplanned litter of kittens. The program helps owners who wish to keep their cat after her kittens are adopted by providing temporary guidance, support, and intake assistance when space and resources allow.
Mother cats and their kittens remain together either in the home or in foster care until the kittens are approximately 8 weeks old and ready for adoption. The kittens are then placed into loving adoptive homes and return to SHAID around 6 months of age to be spayed or neutered.
Once the kittens are weaned and ready, the mother cat is spayed at a subsidized cost and returned to her owner. This program helps prevent future unplanned litters while allowing families to keep their beloved pets.
