FOSTER A CAT OR KITTEN – CHANGE A LIFE

Fostering is a meaningful way to support animals in need by giving them a safe, loving home while they wait for adoption. Whether it’s just a couple of weeks or a few months, your care helps them grow, heal, and thrive.

As a foster caregiver, you’ll stay connected with the SHAID team—providing weekly updates, reaching out with questions, and letting us know of any concerns. Some foster cats may need to return to the shelter for check-ups, treatments, or vaccinations.

Once they’re ready for their forever home, you’ll bring them back to SHAID to find the family they deserve.

Foster homes save lives—and we couldn’t do it without you.

SHORT-TERM FOSTERING – A SMALL COMMITMENT WITH A BIG IMPACT

We’re seeking short-term foster homes to care for cats before their arrival at SHAID on our next Intake Day. These animals often come with unknown medical histories, so a quiet space away from other pets is ideal.

Time Commitment: Foster stays typically last from a few days to a couple of weeks.

SHAID provides all supplies and support—you provide comfort and safety during an important transition.

Your home is their first step toward a better life.

FOSTERING NEONATAL KITTENS – HELP THE TINIEST LIVES THRIVE

Occasionally, SHAID takes in orphaned or abandoned newborn kittens—some just days old and without a mother. These fragile little ones need dedicated, around-the-clock care to survive.

Neonatal fosters play a critical role by:

  • Bottle or syringe feeding every 2–3 hours

  • Weighing kittens daily to monitor growth

  • Keeping them warm, clean, and safe in a quiet, secure space

Time Commitment: up to 7 weeks

Because of the intensive care involved, this foster opportunity is best suited for people who work from home, have flexible schedules, or can bring the kittens with them during the day.

Your time and care can save lives!

FOSTERING A PREGNANT CAT OR MAMA WITH KITTENS

When a pregnant cat (also called a “queen”) arrives at SHAID, we count on compassionate foster homes to give her a calm, quiet space to safely deliver and raise her kittens. A separate room away from other pets is essential to reduce stress and ensure a smooth transition into motherhood.

As a foster, your role includes:

  • Monitoring for signs of labor

  • Letting mom care for her kittens naturally, stepping in only if needed

  • Observing the kittens’ growth and ensuring they’re nursing, warm, and clean

Time Commitment: 2–3 months (varies based on birth timing and kitten development)

Foster Responsibilities:

  • Stay in regular contact with SHAID staff

  • Transport mom and kittens for checkups, vaccinations, and adoption at around 8 weeks

Your commitment helps ensure healthy, happy beginnings!
